SUNMARK CHESHIRE TIDE was my first Golden. Chessie was too
smart, an independent spirit, who thought that tennis balls were a ridiculous substitute
for the more admirable pursuit of squirrels and chipmunks, and well, anything that moved
on four legs. Hers was my first dog portrait, and I credit her with the foundation of my
current career as well as the inspiration for the book Im working on, about the dogs
and their portraits. Chessie passed away in April of 96. True to her natural
instincts, she made a bed of leaves in the woods, went to sleep and died. She was eleven.
I was devastated. |
 |
In 1989, I bred Chessie to Goldencharm Pistol Pete. She
produced ten beautiful puppies. Out of that litter, I kept WATERMARK CHOPTANK TIDE. The
Orvis Company bought the rights to this painting and ran a limited edition of 350 prints
in their 1998 Christmas catalogue. The edition has sold out. |
 |
CHOPTANK was too big as conformation goes, but he thought he was a
lapdog. We used to tease Chessie saying, If you didnt have enough brains for
ten puppies, you shouldnt have had ten puppies. I learned after she died that
if she only had nine brains to go around, she had eleven hearts and Choppy got the extra
one. He became my rock. He was happy, gentle, easy, and like no other dog Ive known,
he was a hugger. In October '98 I lost Choppy to a big old tumor on his big old heart.
Still he lives on in my
heart |
